Bell was granted his patent on 7th March, before Gray. Within hours, Elisha Gray of Chicago (1835-1901), a superintendent of the Western Union Telegraph Company, filed a similar application. On the 14th February an application was filed in America for a patent for Bell's apparatus for transmitting vocal sounds. Graham Bell's vocation led him to investigate the artificial reproduction of vowel sounds, resulting in a study of electricity and magnetism, and ultimately the development of the telephone. ![]() He had inherited an interest in the training of deaf children from his father, Alexander Melville Bell, who had been a teacher of elocution at Edinburgh. From here Bell moved to Boston in the United States in 1872 to take up an appointment as a teacher of the deaf.
